    Butter a baking sheet.

    Pour the milk, plus the salt, pepper, and nutmeg into a mixing bowl.

    Dip each of 4 slices of bread one at a time (not for too long, about 3 seconds to avoid them getting too soft), and place them on the baking sheet.

    Add the cheese to the milk, then spread half of it over the slices of bread.

    Dip the remaining 4 slices in the same way as the previous ones.

    Stack them on top of the cheese, then cover with the rest of the shredded cheese.
