    Peel two onions and chop them.

    Peel the carrots, cut them into cubes as well as the bacon.

    Melt the fat in a large pot and fry the bacon bits with a wooden spoon;

    Then lower the heat, add the onions and let them soften on low heat until they become translucent.

    When the onions have nicely softened, add one liter of cold water, pour in the lentils, add the third peeled onion with cloves inserted, a pinch of four spices, and the bouquet garni, stir, bring to a boil, and simmer gently for an hour.
